Handy Trick for Customizing Wordpress Themes: Mozilla’s Firebug Plugin

December 30th, 2009 | 6 Comments »

Firebug PluginFor many site flippers, using Wordpress as a content management system is a great way to quickly and efficiently design a website. However, not everyone is knowledgeable when it comes to playing around with CSS in order to edit a Wordpress theme to their liking. Fortunately, editing a Wordpress theme’s CSS files doesn’t have to be a difficult feat to accomplish thanks to Mozilla Firefox’s Firebug plugin.

Since I started using the plugin, I have found it to be a lifesaver when trying to customize Wordpress themes. While I am knowledgeable with CSS,  I really hate having to test my changes using various software — or constantly refreshing web pages to view the final outcome. With Firefox’s Firebug plugin, I can not only edit css and other html files/settings, but I can do it all on the same screen, live, and track the changes along the way. This comes in handy when I’m trying to see what color scheme works best, or, when I’d like to change more advanced features of a theme such as margins or padding without wrecking havoc on the original CSS file.

10 Must-Have Wordpress Plugins for Site Flippers

When flipping websites, there are just “those” plugins that I absolutely cannot run Wordpress without. My obsession has become so out of control that I fear that one day they may suddenly disappear into thin air, so I keep up-to-date backup copies of these plugins on my computer so that I can easily upload them via FTP in the case of their sudden extinction.

Each one of these plugins serves a vital role in how I’m able to efficiently design a niche website, as well as help make the new owner’s role much easier.

In no particular order, those plugins include:

pageMash

If you’ve ever created pages (not posts) for your website but never understood how to rearrange their order in the navigation bar without configuring each individual page, this is a plugin you need. PageMash is designed to help you rearrange the order of your pages in just a few clicks. Simply drag and drop the pages in the order you want them to appear and then click on “Update.” Instantly, your pages have now been rearranged and you didn’t have to do it manually.

Down, But Not Out!

So what happened to Flippa Chick?!?

Unfortunately, over the course of two weeks I’ve managed to blow through two web hosts, lose two weeks worth of business across 15 active domains that bring in monthly revenue, and suffered the fate of transferring 70+ domains, files, and databases to a new host. All in all, I can say that it has been an eventful past two weeks of which I hope I never have to go through again.

On a much brighter note, if you can’t tell already, Flippa Chick has received yet another face lift — one that I hope will be in place for quite a while. In addition, you may also notice that what once functioned as a part business website and part blog, has now been fully converted into a blog.

This change has been long overdue, and in my efforts to focus more on personal projects and blogging, as of  December 9th, I discontinued accepting private client work in order to launch several projects yearning to become more than just a “good idea.”
